The Henry G. Izatt Middle School team is excitedly preparing for the 2017-2018 school year. Working as a community and with our community are priorities for us. We align our authentic programs and projects with our pillars of “Humanity, Growth, Innovation and Sustainability”. Positive relationships with our students is critically important. Our students initiate global citizenship projects and are able to participate in an area of their passion. In the spring, after successful application for a number grants for the HGI community garden project and an established work crew comprised of students and staff, the HGI gardens were completed.
As the gardens were planted with perennials and heritage vegetables prior to summer, individuals from the school and/or community have been watering and weeding during the summer months.
HGI will offer an orientation session and a tour to new families on September 1st at 10:00 a.m. Classes start on September 6th with students entering between 8:30 and 8:40 a.m. Please check the school calendar and other important information on the HGI website: https://www.pembinatrails.ca/schools/henrygizatt/Pages/default.aspx
There have been many changes to the HGI staff team in the last year. Please check the current staff listing on the HGI website to update your information.
Participation in physical activity are important at HGI. Mornings begin with an active start. As soon as classes start, the Cross Country season will be underway. If community members are interested in participating as supervisors or coaches for our sports teams (after the Cross Country season, Volleyball begins mid-October), please contact the school. Coaches are expected to submit their records checks, complete the online “Respect in Sport” course and follow the expectations of Fair Play. To access the record check forms and the course, the HGI office personnel can assist you.
HGI had one early dismissal per month (students are dismissed at 2:00 p.m.). Our first early dismissal is September 13th. The staff holds professional planning meetings after the student dismissal. The buses run as scheduled on early dismissal days. We would appreciate parents making arrangement to pick up their students on these days once per month. Students who are unable to be transported home at 2:00 p.m. on these days can wait at the school (supervised) until the school buses arrive at 3:25 p.m.
Our school is typically busy beginning in the early morning with band rehearsals, homework help and sports team practices. We are working with the school team on the possibility of opening up our Media Center for at least one evening per week to increase the opportunity for students to access and engage in this space, in addition to the open Band room and Gymnasium. We are planning to offer clubs to students and/or community members. The planning conversations will take place at our Parent Advisory Council Meetings (PAC). The first meeting of PAC is September 19th at 6:30 p.m. at the school. All parents are welcome to attend. Please join us to participate in the dialogue re: community involvement, school programs and school use.
HGI participates in “Strong Beginnings” which provides the opportunity for students to meet individually with their teachers to set learning objectives. Students and their parents will schedule an hour or an hour and a half appointment (depending on the grade level) on either September 15 or 18. There will not be regular classes on those two days. Each student will attend during their appointment time on one of the days. Regular classes resume on September 19th.
Our school community is invited to the “Meet the HGI Staff” event on September 21st after school. More details to follow.
Whyte Ridge participants, please know you have a standing invitation to HGI school events, concerts, sporting events and assemblies. Thank you for your sincere contributions to our school!
