Even though it is early in 2018, planning and preparations are underway for the next school year. For our grade 9’s, tours are bring arranged for visits and orientation sessions at both Fort Richmond Collegiate (FRC) on February 20 and Vincent Massey Collegiate (VMC) on February 22, 2018. Students will receive registration packages and will be given guidance on their registration for credits. Staff teams from both high schools will be spending time at HGI to assist during this process.
It is important for families in our neighborhood to check their catchment high school for grade 10 registration. Students living in Whyte Ridge may register at VMC or FRC. Students living in Bridgwater register at FRC. Student who are attending HGI on a school of choice application must register at their catchment school or submit another school of choice application (and be accepted) for the next school. This link Find your school provides information on catchment schools. This link https://www.pembinatrails.ca/School/HowtoRegister/SchoolsofChoice/Pages/default.aspx provides information on the schools of choice application process and links to the forms to submit.
Our grade 8’s will be registering for their first year of high school credits at HGI grade 9. HGI administration will be visiting grade 8 classes and providing students with an information overview. The registration packages for grade 9 will be distributed on February 12th and the information will be available online. The family information evening about the registration process for HGI’s grade 9 program and the credit options offered will be held at HGI on February 15 at 7:00 p.m. in our gym. The online registration process for credit selection will open on February 16 in the morning.
The registration packages for grades 5 – 8 will be distributed on February 12th. All registration information will also be available online linked through our website.
Grade 7 and 8 students will be required to indicate their choice of option – Band or Art. Staffing is aligned based on option choices so this decision needs to be taken seriously as switching options after the fact becomes difficult.
Intensive French will be offered at grade 6 during the 2018-2019 school year. HGI administration will be visiting the grade 5 classes to explain this program to students. An information evening about this program will be held on March 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. Registration will be available after this evening session.
Administration will be reading to grade 4 students at Whyte Ridge Elementary School for “I Love to Read Month”. The HGI administration will also visit Whyte Ridge to speak with grade 4 students as they begin the transition to grade 4 and the new school. A number of activities will take place to help students become familiar with the school prior to entering in September 2018. With our growing catchment area, a number of our future students are not currently attending a school in Whyte Ridge. They, too, will be invited to the introductory activities and can access information by contacting the school or by checking the HGI website: https://www.pembinatrails.ca/schools/henrygizatt/
February promises to be a busy month at the school. In addition to registration for next year, the school will host two “Artists in the School”. There will be a “Scraphic Novel” activity for grade 6’s and a jewelry making workshop for grade 8’s. Selected grade 9 students will spend part of one day working with clay with the seniors at Riverwood square. The grade 9 Leadership students will be hosting a “Sock Hop” activity for the grade 5 and 6 students.
