It might be hard to tell as we hide away in hibernation, but the days are already getting longer, and spring really is coming! It’s time to start thinking about our spring time activities, including soccer!
We are looking forward to another fun season of mini soccer in Whyte Ridge! Recreational mini soccer is a great way to enjoy the May and June evenings with our children and neighbours. This year children born in the years 2011 to 2016 are welcome to play in our program.
The current plan for this year is to have all of the age groups, except U3/4, play at Whyte Ridge Elementary School. The little ones will play at Don Smith Park on Tuesdays as they have for many years. Unlike previous years, this year U5/6 will be a combined age group of children born in 2013 and 2014. This group will play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The U7/8s, both boys and girls, will play on Mondays and Wednesdays. You can find all the other information about mini soccer on the Whyte Ridge Community Centre Website.
We love being able to share our time on the field with our child – running, laughing, cheering, learning skills and being a part of a team together. We encourage parents to volunteer as coaches or assistant coaches for their child’s team. We will support you with coaching tips, a manual of games and drills and by being available throughout the season for you to bounce ideas off. At the mini soccer level, you do not need to know how to play soccer to be a great coach and role model for our children! The behind the scenes work has already started for this year. Karthi Pariyasamy and Rachael Fecyk-Lamb are continuing as co-directors of mini-soccer this year, and we are excited to work with returning and new conveners: Tracy (U5/6), Janine (U7/8 girls), and Courtney (U7/8 boys). Paulo Ferreira will be moving into the Mini-Soccer Equipment Manager position
We are looking for 1 more convener for the U3/4 (co-ed) group; these are children born in 2015 and 2016. Convening involves attending one meeting, making teams, distributing equipment to coaches in April and then sending emails to organize coaches in the spring. It is not a difficult job; it takes about 30 to 60 minutes a week, and it means so much to so many. We have a more detailed description of the position and all of the information you need, and we will support you in this position as much as you like throughout the season. Please email the mini-soccer directors if you are interested in learning more about being a convener.
Registration for the 2019 season will be open February 25, 2019. Information about how to register on-line will be available on the Whyte Ridge Community Centre website.
