On June 24, three hearty WRCC volunteers planted 10 new saplings donated by the City to help facilitate naturalization of the north end of our site. Many thanks to our summer student Adam who braved the rain to help out.
With the new City summer staff just coming on board people are forgetting not to mow this area, so we created a little natural fence to help remind them. Over the summer we expect the neighbouring mature willow to start growing into the edges of this area and we have plans to redistribute some of the existing smaller trees planted a few years ago to help fill in the space. This work is part of a larger master plan designed by our current site development director Nick Barnes. The plan includes the refurbished soccer pitches we now enjoy, the trail system, butterfly garden, informational signs, benches, naturalized prairie on the east side of the property and the many trees that have already been planted with more to come.
