Having fun – that’s the purpose of the Winter Carnival, an annual event that has been held in our community for close to 20 years. It provides a rare opportunity during the wintertime to engage and relax in a welcoming environment, and to bond with our neighbours, whom we never really get a chance to see.
As you step through the doors, the aroma of hot chocolate fills the air, wafting out from the cafeteria where you can purchase cookies and a cup of this deliciousness for a small fee.
You are greeted with a smile and kind words from the ladies working the ticket table. Here you can purchase tickets for the Silent Auction, 50/50 Draw or even the Jets Tickets Raffle. Who knows, maybe it’s your lucky day!
As you walk further into the hall, you arrive at Children’s World, where kids demonstrate their skills, like catching soap bubbles and sliding on the MyGym indoor play structure. Of course, there is an area for crafting and glitter tattoos. This is a great opportunity for parents to get involved and help their kids realize creative ideas. We know for a fact that these kinds of activities promote self-expression, motor skills and enhance problem-solving abilities.
It’s time to get some fresh air so you step outside. In spite of the cold weather (-25˚C, brrrr!), everyone is enjoying outdoor activities: skating, tobogganing, and even milk jug curling. Sleigh rides are a hit, adding excitement for the whole family, young and old. What a unique opportunity to feel like we’ve travelled back to olden times when horses were the only way to get around.
Can it be a Winter Carnival without a fire pit and marshmallow roast? Of course not! Warm flames always make you feel cozy and welcome, even when it’s frosty outside. Kids are excited, patiently waiting for their marshmallows to melt, a perfect energy boost before dashing off to the next activity.
What a great, positive way to begin the New Year in our neighbourhood! Keep it up, Whyte Ridge!
