Basketball Update!

Wow! What a finish to our spring basketball season!

In what was certainly the most decorated Whyte Ridge Basketball season on record, we had three teams playing for the City Championships on Sunday.

The 16-18 year old boys led by coach, Michael Duong “ran the table” this season by going undefeated. The Whyte Ridge team emerged victorious among 37 teams in the 16-18 boys division. It was quite an impressive accomplishment.

The championship game at Dakota Field House was never in doubt as Ashton Laping dropped 14 points enroute to a 44-22 drubbing over their Lindenwoods opponent.

Meanwhile up the street at Darwin School the Whyte Ridge 13/14 year old girls were also making history.

Earlier in the day Madelaine McCarthy led the team with 8 points in a defensive battle against the undefeated Southdale Lakers in a 23-20 semi-final nail biter.

That set the stage for the final against Oxford Heights. It went back and forth all game until Kishi Folarin and Leher Kumar made clutch baskets in the last minute to secure the win, 33-29 for the Whyte Ridge team;

The Whyte Ridge 13 year old boys came up short 33-28 to Dakota in their divisional final but coach, Chris Goetz was quite proud of his team saying that they were a great group of young players and they worked hard all season.

The boys earned their spot in the final by gritting out a 30-28 win against the 1st place South Winnipeg team in the semi-final game;

In addition to our teen team accomplishments this spring, I’d also like to acknowledge that the foundation of youth basketball in Whyte Ridge is strong. Our younger developmental teams had great seasons learning the game.

Special thanks to a few more of our amazing volunteer coaches:

Maddy Horton (7/8 coed), Jim Dear (10yr old boys) & Michael Duong (11yr old boys).

Of course, thanks to all the parents as well for your tremendous support throughout the spring.

See y’all in the fall!!
