Another outdoor soccer season has come to an end, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the year, celebrate our volunteers, and share where we’re headed next.
First, I want to thank all of our parents, players, coaches, and volunteers. Soccer continues to grow in Whyte Ridge community, none of this would be possible without the volunteerd their time to make our programs successful. Thank you Coaches and Convenors!
Mini Soccer
Our Mini Soccer program continues to be the heart of soccer in our community. This season, we welcomed 140 young players to the fields, introducing children to the game in a fun,
positive, and supportive environment.
Watching our youngest players build confidence, make new friends, and score their first goals is always one of the highlights of the season. The weather made it difficult, but a huge thank you to our volunteer coaches, activity leaders, and parents who made sessions enjoyable for everyone.
U8/U9 Grassroots Soccer – A Year of Learning
The 2026 season marked a significant change for U8/U9 soccer as we transitioned to Soccer’s new Grassroots programming model. This new approach focuses on player development, skill-building, and small-sided game experiences rather than traditional league play.
Like many community center’s across Winnipeg, WRCC faced challenges adapting to these changes. Scheduling delays and changes to the program created frustration for players, parents, coaches, and volunteers. While we worked hard to provide the best experience possible, I recognize that this program did not meet the standard I expect, and I appreciate everyone’s patience throughout the season.
Many of you reached out with thoughtful feedback, and I want you to know it was heard. I’ve shared your comments with both the Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association (WYSA) and Manitoba Soccer Association (MSA) to help improve the Grassroots experience for community centers moving forward.
This first year taught us a lot. While change is never easy, I’m confident we’ll see improvements that better support our players, families, and volunteers in future seasons.
Youth Soccer
This season, Whyte Ridge Community Centre fielded seven teams. It was fantastic to see so many returning players and new players throughout the outdoor season.
Our youth teams also experienced a rocky start, with numerous games cancelled or postponed because of the weather. This season had its share of challenges. Despite these obstacles, our players continued to compete with enthusiasm, our coaches adapted week after week, and our families remained incredibly supportive. Thank you for your patience and commitment throughout the season.
World Cup in Canada
This summer has been an exciting one for soccer fans across the country with the FIFA World Cup. I hope many of you had the chance to watch a match—or even better, attend one in person.
Seeing Canada earn its first FIFA World Cup victory on Canadian soil was an incredible moment for Canadian soccer and a reminder of how much the sport has grown in our country.
Today, soccer is Canada’s most-played sport, and that’s exciting for our community. Every year we see more children wanting to play, more parents volunteering, and more opportunities to help players develop.
Looking Ahead
As Soccer Director, one of my goals is to continue making soccer easier to access and more enjoyable for families in Whyte Ridge.
Over the coming months, I’ll be working with our volunteers and neighboring community centers to explore new programming opportunities and strengthen the player pathway within our community. Whether your child is taking their first kick in Mini Soccer or looking for opportunities to continue developing their skills, I want WRCC to offer a place for everyone to enjoy the game. There is still work to do, but I’m excited about the direction we’re heading.

I truly enjoy volunteering in this role because I believe every child deserves the opportunity to play, learn, and develop through sport. Seeing our players grow—not just as soccer players, but as teammates and young people—is what makes it all worthwhile.
